Wembanyama’s France Stays Unbeaten at 7-1 in FIBA World Cup Qualifying

Victor Wembanyama and France closed out the August window of FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifying unbeaten, running their record to 7-1 and sitting atop their qualifying group. Les Bleus beat Slovenia 92-67 on Aug. 27, then went on the road and handled Sweden 84-69 on Aug. 30.

Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs center, has led the group as national team captain, a role he was given ahead of this qualifying cycle. Qualifying continues into the spring, with matches running through March 2027 and the top nations from Europe advancing to the World Cup final tournament in Qatar. France’s early dominance gives the program a cushion as the qualifying window winds down and the games get tougher.

For Spurs fans, the qualifying window doubles as a low-stakes look at Wembanyama heading into a pivotal NBA season. The No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft has spent his first three NBA seasons establishing himself as one of the league’s most singular talents, a 7-foot-4 center who can protect the rim, switch onto guards and shoot from the perimeter. Playing meaningful, competitive minutes for France in the summer gives him game reps and a leadership role without the wear of an 82-game NBA schedule, and it lets him work on ball-handling and playmaking reps in a lower-pressure setting than the NBA playoffs.

There is a real question every summer about how much international commitment is too much for a franchise cornerstone still developing his body, especially one who missed the second half of the 2024-25 season after being diagnosed with a blood clot in his shoulder. So far this window has not produced any red flags: France has controlled its qualifying games comfortably, and Wembanyama has not needed to play exhausting minutes to keep the group unbeaten.

The Spurs open training camp when the rest of the league does, on Sept. 29, with the regular season tipping off Oct. 20. Wembanyama’s national team obligations will wrap up well before then, giving him a normal buildup to a season in which San Antonio will try to build on last spring’s playoff appearance, Wembanyama’s first taste of postseason basketball.
