The Los Angeles Lakers are hiring Eric Amsler as an assistant general manager, pulling him away from a Miami Heat front office he had been part of for more than two decades, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, with additional reporting from Dave McMenamin and the Sun-Sentinel’s Ira Winderman.
Amsler joined the Heat as an intern in 2004 and worked through scouting and personnel roles over the next 22 years. He eventually became vice president of player personnel and also served as general manager of Miami’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, guiding it to consecutive Western Conference semifinal appearances and winning G League Executive of the Year in 2023-24.
A departure from one of the NBA’s most stable staffs
The hire is a significant opportunity for Amsler, but it also stands out because Miami’s basketball operations department is known for continuity. Pat Riley, Andy Elisburg, Adam Simon and Keith Askins have each spent decades with the organization. A 22-year employee leaving is notable precisely because senior staff turnover has been rare.
What Eric Amsler adds to the Lakers
Amsler is expected to work alongside assistant GM Rohan Ramadas, with an emphasis on pro and draft scouting and player development. Ramadas has focused on analytics and salary-cap strategy, so the addition gives president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka another experienced evaluator as Los Angeles plans its next roster moves.
Amsler’s background spans NBA scouting, player personnel and G League development. That mix can matter in areas that receive less attention than major trades: evaluating draft prospects, identifying two-way players, developing young talent and finding useful contributors around the margins of the roster.
