Amen Thompson agreed to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale extension with the Houston Rockets, the team confirmed this week. Thompson, the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft, is entering his fourth NBA season locked into Houston’s long-term core.
The extension caps a breakout third season. In 2025-26, Thompson set career highs across the board, averaging 18.3 points, 5.3 assists, 1.5 steals and 7.8 rebounds over 79 starts while leading the NBA in total minutes at 37.4 per game. He was also named to the NBA’s All-Defensive First Team for the 2024-25 season.
Rockets general manager Rafael Stone said, “Amen represents everything we want our organization to be about. He has elite two-way ability, a toughness and the will to outwork his peers, and he competes in every circumstance.”
The deal locks in one of the league’s most productive two-way wings before he could reach unrestricted free agency, and it does so while Houston’s championship window is wide open. Thompson now extends alongside Kevin Durant and Alperen Sengun as part of Houston’s core, with Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanovic added this offseason to deepen the rotation around them.
For a team built to contend immediately, locking Thompson’s role and price now removes one of the few remaining questions about who occupies the wing spot next to Durant and Sengun for the rest of the decade. It also signals how Houston is prioritizing continuity: rather than let extension talks drag into restricted free agency next summer, the Rockets moved early on a player whose defensive versatility and rebounding fill a role few teams can replace.
With Thompson’s future settled, Houston enters training camp with its likely starters and rotation largely locked in before the first exhibition game is played.
