The Minnesota Timberwolves traded guard Josh Green and cash considerations to the Utah Jazz for forward Cody Williams and guard John Konchar, both teams confirmed Wednesday. ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the deal before it became official. Minnesota waived Konchar shortly after the trade closed.
Green, a 6-foot-6 guard entering his seventh NBA season, has played for the Dallas Mavericks and, more recently, the Charlotte Hornets. Williams, a 6-foot-8 forward, was the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 draft and averaged a career-high 8.8 points on 46.8% shooting last season.
For Utah, the trade adds a proven rotation wing in Green while moving on from Williams, a former lottery pick who has yet to lock down a consistent role. For Minnesota, it is a bet on Williams’ upside on a rookie-scale salary while clearing Konchar’s roster spot for other moves.
Two days later, the Timberwolves signed free-agent forward Jonathan Kuminga. That timing suggests the Williams-for-Green swap was as much about clearing roster space as it was about talent evaluation.
Minnesota’s forward rotation already includes Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels, and now adds both Williams and Kuminga heading into training camp. That gives Minnesota’s coaching staff more frontcourt combinations to test in the preseason, at the cost of settling a rotation with more mouths to feed.
